Lili Elbe

Lili Elbe is recorded in the history books as the very first transgender person to undergo a gender reassignment procedure. Despite the fact that Elbe in 1904 married her husband while still legally male, she moved to Germany in the 1930s where she procured various experimental sex reassignment surgeries. While the first two of the procedures were successful, the third and the forth surgeries were not successful and were almost fatal. She eventually managed to successfully change her gender and later on changed her name.
