Camels were for the longest time a symbol of wealth in ancient time, especially in the Middle East. Camels were a multipurpose animal that was used for both transportation and storage. Camels were also a great source of milk, hair (used in the manufacture of clothes and brushes) and under unfortunate circumstances, they were slaughtered for meat when food was scarce. Currently however, the transportation functions of camels have been rendered obsolete by the advent of modern transportation techniques. Dubai for example is known to be home to some of the world’s flashiest cars. You will therefore hardly find anyone riding a camel in this region.
