20 of the World’s Scariest Bridges

  •  Sunshine Skyway Bridge, Florida

Built above Florida’s Tampa Bay, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge is a stunning bridge that measures 6.7km long. The bridge was officially opened in April of 1987 and cost approximately $244m as a replacement for an older bridge that had been largely destroyed earlier. The bridge is run by Florida Department of Transportation and carries approximately 52,000 vehicles. The vertical clearance of the bridge ranges at about 193ft and features substructures. The bridge has been designed for strength and robustness against various forces. It has also been reinforced a couple times and is believed to be strong enough to withstand the impact of ship weighing 87,000t. The bridge is considered scary due to the stigma that surrounds it as a result of a massive tanker collision that destroyed the one that previously stood on its place. Reports that more than 200 people have committed suicide on the bridge since its construction makes it even scarier.
