20 of the World’s Scariest Bridges

  • Royal Gorge Bridge, Colorado

Built in 1929, the Royal Gorge Bridge is an astonishing yet scary bridge that spans over 1,260 feet and has a width of 18 feet. The construction of the bridge lasted six months between June and November of 1929 and cost approximately $350,000. Besides being United States of America’s highest bridge, the Royal Gorge Bridge has some pretty interesting history behind it. Despite being constructed in the late ‘20s, the bridge lacked stabilizing wind cables for over half a century. Leading up to the installation of the wind cables in 1982, the bridge was pretty scary and not a lot of people were comfortable using it. At 291m high, it is classified among the world’s highest bridges. The bridge hangs over the Arkansas River at 965 feet. Quite a number of people who have used the bridge have reported that it induces vertigo. It currently features a cable car crossing for the very brave.
